May 20, 2008 – Dyakowski Eager to Start (read more)
Dyakowski eager to start He says best of Ticats are returning, he wants to open holes for Lumsden
May 20, 2008 Ken Peters
The Hamilton Spectator
(May 20, 2008)
There's no question he puts the "off" in offbeat.
And there is no question that, with his unique West Coast perspective and long, flowing mane of curls, Peter Dyakowski proved to be one of the more interesting Tiger-Cats last season. But he is also one of the most promising.
The Cats drafted the 6-foot-5, 320-pound offensive lineman with the 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft. Dyakowski had played four seasons with the Louisiana State Tigers, where he started 13 of 27 games at right tackle.
But Dyakowski signed a free-agent contract with the New Orleans Saints, meaning he missed the Tiger-Cat training camp last season. After being released by the Saints, Dyakowski made his way to Hamilton in time to watch the Cats second preseason contest. He was forced to play catch-up in a hurry.
With injuries slowing the start of the season for George Hudson and Pascal Cheron, the Cats were forced to bring along the rookie faster than expected. Dyakowski found himself starting at guard by the fourth contest of the season, and later moved over to tackle. He was joined by another rookie on the offensive line -- Cedric Gagne-Marcoux.
The big lad, who went down late in the season with a knee injury, was a big reason the Cats led the league with a rather gaudy six-plus yards per rush.
But the prospect of rejoining a more experienced offensive line and the chance to take part in his first Ticat training camp has Dyakowski chomping at the bit. He has been training hard this off-season at his alma mater in Baton Rouge.
"I'm looking forward to going into the season on the same page as everyone else," Dyakowski said, adding he had a "blast" playing in Steeltown last season.
Indeed Dyakowski is one of the reasons the Cat offensive line has the chance to be one of the best in the country. The Cats are loaded with Canadian talent up front, with Dyakowski, who can play both tackle and guard, Hudson, Gagne-Marcoux, J.P Bekasiak and youngsters Jordan Rempel and Eric Ince.
Dyakowski is also brimming with optimism about a new Cat season.
"I think we're poised to have a very good season. If you look at our strong points we had, all of that is coming back," the Vancouver native said, adding he is particularly looking forward to opening holes for Jesse Lumsden.
"He is just a fantastic guy, a terrific person. If I had to pick one guy for a road trip to Alaska where we had to spend 30 hours in a car together, he would be one of my top picks," Dyakowski said.
Doing and saying quirky things comes with the territory. Last season Dyakowski boarded a WestJet flight back to Hamilton with a load of breakfast granola bars that he handed out to the flight crew.
He is already hoping to become a fixture with the Tiger-Cats TV, a mainstay of the club's website. But that's only a start.
"Maybe I could do a radio program. I think I would make a really good DJ. I think I could handle the evening commute."
If Dyakowski can continue driving off the ball to create holes for Lumsden, he can expect to hear his name a lot on local airwaves.
